Geeks Unite & Take Over

I'm fessin' up now; I'm a spreadsheet geek. You could be forgiven for mistaking that my enthusiasm for planning my training is all about the running. Well, it kinda is but its also partly a bit of a fetish for columns, equations and conditional formatting. I really rather enjoy colour coding my long runs, tempo and lactate threshold sessions and embedding formulae to calculate the proportion of road miles in my weekly mileage - one has to monitor these things.
You can be forgiven for thinking that this might all seem a bit too planned and robotic. And I suppose it is a bit. But I'm embarrassed to say I sort of enjoy it. I love my running; its simple freedom; carpets of heather in late summer; the feeling of the wind whipping through my hair. But I also quite like the science of the sport; the planning, the execution, the review. Once you've learned the ingredients for a good race recipe, its just the blend that's left to perfect. Running is ace. It has something for everyone. Even the geeks can get their kicks.

Planning is good! I hadn't planned anything for yesterday evening and ended up doing nothing running wise even though I should have.

I fight a constant battle with myself between planning and actually getting things done or going with the flow and inevitably not getting as much done as I should. Should take a leaf out of your book.

M's corner of wisdom

If a magpie do curse you, then run to the left
If a sparrow do curse you then run to the right
But if a finch do curse you then you must stay true to the middle

I was just considering the very same topic while standing in the sandwich shop this lunchtime.

Had I written a plan for this week then I would have had a hard session last night, but as I had a mild (have been doing cerebral work) headache and heavy legs I deferred it to tonight. Now I feel hungry for a brutal effort session.

Maybe it's best just to have a general idea about what we want to achieve with our week, then be flexible according to how we feel and what demands life makes of us?

i think that's one of the reasons why i enjoy your blog-it's the opposite to my approach to anything. not that i see you as a curiosity or anything ;)

Hi Jullbags, thanks for the reassuring words, I guess its not too bad when you enjoy the tinkering, and thanks Kate.. I'm coming to accept my planning is freakish to some ;)

The planning thing is tricky, you might have picked up that I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to training...
I think flexibility is relevant if my body's telling me I'm pushing too hard. I know that if I don't stick to a clear plan then I risk slacking off or getting too carried away.
But it depends on what you want and what you get from your running. It works for me best this way. RB.
